Medical Supplies for Competition
Funded May 13, 2021Every year when it comes time for students to decide what area to compete in, they struggled with the tough choice of choosing a topic that they really enjoyed but needed to find supplies for or competing in a topic that they were less interested in but I had the materials for. This year it was nice to be able to say that they could choose anything and the materials would be available.
The CPR/ First Aid competition is one of the more popular competitions but very materials heavy. The students need to work in teams and be prepared for 2 victims which can range from needing CPR intervention to flesh wounds. The equipment such as the bag valve masks were especially hard to find, but an essential part of the kit to practice their skills with. They are eagerly practicing using the bandages and memorizing procedures for handling wounds, hypothermia, shock, and dislocated shoulders.
Having a large amount of athletic tape for my students to practice taping ankles, thumbs, and elbows has also been helpful for my sports medicine competition team. They are quickly gaining proficiency and can now tape ankles with decent coverage. I hope to see them place in the top three for the state competition and advance on to National Competition.
My medical biotechnology team also appreciated the personal protective equipment such as the boot covers, hair covers, sterile gloves and isolation gowns. Not having to search for the appropriate attire has allowed them to focus on skills such as identifying bacteria, preparing laboratory equipment, and growing bacterial colonies.
Thank you again for helping me get peace of mind knowing that my students supply needs are met and we can focus on studying and skill development.”

Funded May 17, 2021In a science class it is very rare to read anything other than a textbook. So having a large collection of fiction and bibliographies to offer them and to allow for student choice was appreciated by the students. They eagerly scanned through the titles and descriptions and I was happy to note that some of the students were interested in several titles and were already asking if they could read the other books or be placed in that person's reading group. I have also started a waitlist for certain books which are very popular such as Radium Girls and The Real Grey's Anatomy.
Students were placed in groups where each person had selected a different text. This would allow them to share a unique summary each class period. They are set to read a fraction of the text each week and spend about 20 minutes discussing their various books at the end of the week. This allows them to hear about several books throughout the quarter. Although we are only into the first week of reading, they enjoy sharing their unique insights into the chapters that they've completed. They have also voiced that being able to hear about the books has made them want to read some of the texts themselves to see if it really is as good as their classmate is making it sound. Some of the heavier topic books such as This is Going to Hurt and Fragile Beginnings have given students a better understanding of the difficulties and demands of healthcare and working in pediatrics or obstetrics.
I am excited to see where the reading takes us and hope to continue the reading groups into the future years. Thank you for helping expand our library and inspiring my students.”

Funded May 27, 2021The students have started our school year with excitement. I had piled the books high to show them the generous donation and they were very excited to being able to compete without the stress of finding extra content to use as study materials.
They have started recruiting members and forming study groups for specific competitions. There is great interest in the Medical Law, Veterinary Science, Dental and Cultural Diversity books. The dental group has split up the book to create online quizzes to share with their study team and have been using the pictures to create practice labeling worksheets. The mathematics group has done similar work and created quizzes with their own questions based on the sample problems that they solved from the textbook. Medical Law and the Cultural Differences groups are searching for small case studies to help their members understand and apply the different chapters of the text.
It is exciting to have the students back in the class and enthusiastic about learning new topics. Competition does look like it will be a virtual format this year, but the students are enjoying the idea of adding to their skills and content knowledge. Thank you again for helping them to achieve their goals.”

Funded May 7, 2021The students have started our school year with excitement. I had piled the books high to show them the generous donation and they were very excited to being able to compete without the stress of finding extra content to use as study materials.
They have started recruiting members and forming study groups for specific competitions. There is great interest in the orthopedic taping, veterinary science and human diseases books. The ability to see the procedures and illnesses with detailed pictures have helped in their learning. I was able to look over the books and hone some of my skills so that I can assist with demonstrating some of the techniques.
So far we have practiced taping ankles and will be starting to tape thumbs next week. It was an engaging welcome back to school lesson that quickly grabbed the students attention. I plan on working in veterinary science lessons in the upcoming weeks. The students have mentioned that they are excited to be able to identify common ailments in dogs and cats. I also used the human diseases books to create case studies for my students to solve. This will involve them looking at patient symptoms and developing a plan for treatment based off their knowledge in the class.
The resources you have helped to provide will have in impact far into the future. Thank you for supporting my students in their learning and inspiring students to continue their work into the health field.”

Funded Apr 2, 2017Thank you for your generous donation. The dissection kit has been used in multiple classes to conduct dissections on the rats and the sheep lung/heart sections. It has benefited my students in my human physiology and health core classes. It was wonderful to see the excitement build in my students as the day for dissection approached. I had told them ahead of time that dissection materials were coming in and they should prepare by studying the anatomy for their dissection. They eagerly took on the task and were well prepared on the day of the dissections.
When the materials arrived they were intrigued and ecstatic. They were a little worried about being able to dissect rats and some were even fearful of opening the animal up. However, they were eager to get started. They had shared with other students on campus that they were going to conduct dissections and other students stopped in to look at the materials. My students were thrilled that they would get the opportunity that they had been waiting for.
The dissection went well. The students were initially a little hesitant in opening up the rat or the heart, but they eventually dove in and began removing and identifying organs and chambers with confidence. By the end of the period all students had their gloved hands in the organs. The students did remark that some organs were larger than expected and that the diagrams they studied were nothing like working on real organs. The sheep heart/lung section helped my struggling students to see the flow of blood and understand the functioning of the heart much better. They made connections between the higher amount of muscle mass in the ventricles that could contribute to the pumping of blood in the body. The rat dissection also helped students to think deeper about animal form and function. They posed additional questions that they were then able to investigate. For example, one group questioned what the rat's ate and were able to investigate the stomach contents. Then, they noticed the roughness of the stomach lining and were able to make connections to the ability to break down food.
In the future I plan to reuse some of the dissections. The dissections are able to be preserved in a ziploc bag for up to 3 years. As long as the organs have not been damaged they could still be used for other students to investigate anatomy. Also there is a swine heart that is preserved differently and already prepared for me to be able to reuse for 10-15 years. This donation will continue to benefit my future students as well.
Next year some students may use their knowledge to create interactive booths for a community event that will teach the importance of healthy behaviors on the body.”
