Special Education students are already at a disadvantage when it comes to where they currently are to where they should be. Our students are diagnosed with a variety of delays, deficiencies, and disorders. How we motivate and encourage the students can be a challenge on a daily basis. Some of them are struggling with writing, reading, and comprehension. Many of them fall grades below where they are supposed to be and this has been discouraging to many of them. How can we make the classroom a place where they will number one want to come in, but more importantly want to stay? The answer is simple, we make the class student friendly! This furniture will allow students who have difficulties sitting still, who have issues with focusing, or students who have fidgeting concerns. Now instead of the entire class being aware of certain behaviors the swing on the bottom of the desk allows these same students to feel confident and deal with their own anxieties in a way that is personal and that will not disturb others. I know sometimes teaching can be difficult and as educators we must strive to find ways to better educate or students. I know that relationships we establish with students means just as much as curriculum. If we can make the students trust us, if they want to come to class, if they know that we truly care about them as a whole child and not just as a passing grade it makes teaching much more rewarding. Sitting at these desks I know will be a benefit for many of my students. Their attitude about learning will improve and as a result their grades will reflect the positive change.
