  • Twisteez Wire for Gee's Bend Quilts

    Funded Apr 10, 2017

Thank you so much for your support! Students loved learning about the Gee's Bend quilts and, with your donation, they were able to make colorful wire versions of their own collaborative quilts.

The Gee's Bend quilters are an African American quilting community in the rural south. Students learned about this important art collective and bent, twisted and cut wire to put their own quilts group together. This sort of collaboration is crucial to the social and emotional growth of middle school students. Furthermore, the act of manipulating wire was a wonderful exercise for students' motor skills.

Thank you again for your donation!”

  • Happy Homes for Art Materials

    Funded Mar 12, 2017

Thank you so much for your generous donation. Our new bins have made a tremendous difference to the art program at our school!

Our school is overcrowded and we unfortunately do not have the space for an art room. Before having these bins, I kept students' work and materials in folders, cardboard boxes and plastic bags--this was unsightly and ineffective as things were always getting lost or accidentally thrown out. These bins help me keep students materials and artwork organized as I travel from room to room to teach. Students spend less time looking for work and materials, and more time creating. Thank you again for donating to our art program!”

    With gratitude,

  • Paint On! High School Portfolio Prep

    Funded Mar 7, 2017

Thank you so much for your generous donation to our after school portfolio prep club. My students were so excited to see receive their new supplies, and got busy painting right away. With their new paints, my students have been making portraits, still lives and works from imagination--all of which can be added to their high school portfolios.

Applying to high school in New York City is a very demanding process. My students in the portfolio prep club are interested in applying to competitive specialized art high school. Their experiences working with paint, and the beautiful paintings they've made, will help them tremendously with the application process.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. McKendrick

So far this school year, most of our portfolio club students' work has been limited to colored pencils and regular #2 writing pencils. These ambitious youngsters desperately want to take their talents to the next level with higher quality drawing materials and acrylic paint. With these new materials like acrylics and pastels, they will be creating work that NYC's top high schools require for application portfolios, such as self portraits, still lives and interiors. They will also make personal and imaginative work that truly shows who they are as individuals. These projects will be self-directed, and include paintings of original anime characters and a pastel series of what is seen outside our windows every day. Giving students the opportunity to use new and high quality materials helps affirm their identity as artists and will make their application portfolios more attractive to NYC's top high schools.
