Many of our students have experienced things in their young lives that they are learning to cope with. As the school counselor, often times those students wind up in my office for a number of reasons, whether it's trauma related, home situations, difficult emotions, or trouble relating and communicating with friends. Sometimes children need to express things that, developmentally, they do not have the words for. Children, especially young children, often communicate best through their play. The fulfillment of this project will help me to better equip my school counseling office with toys and items that help children to express themselves, calm down and think, and tell their story. LEGOs make wonderful creative tools for a variety of projects in the school counseling world, from using colors to tell feelings, to building their world right in front of you. Board games can be used to work on controlling impulsivity and expressing good sportsmanship. Sand and sand toys are also great creative outlets for storytelling, mindfulness, and recognizing calm feelings.
