  • Empathy Through Reading

    Funded Aug 21, 2019

Our new books have provided my students with an opportunity to develop a love of literature. They can connect to new experiences and characters in a way that for many of them, they have never been able to do before. Prior to this year, most of my students were required to read whatever was asked of them in class. Throughout the year, every student can read books of their choice for independent reading, regardless of topic or genre. Each day we start with time to independently read and throughout the year we make entries in our Reader's Notebooks, to help us stay accountable in our weekly page goals and to further connect and think critically about our books.

It is awesome to have students come into class excited about their books. So many times throughout the week, students will enthusiastically tell me about their books, where they are and if they can check out their next one. Thank you to all our donors that helped us along the way!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Matthei

This classroom project was brought to life by Sergey Brin Family Foundation and 8 other donors.
This year, across our 7th grade team, we are putting a heavier emphasis on reading. While we have always pushed reading, this year we are making it a grade wide norm to better integrate reading for pleasure in our classes. Our students will read and write in their reader's notebooks to help dig deeper into their books. We will have ample time in class and their homework will simply be to read every night. To support my students, I want to make sure that I have an ample library of different genres, authors, stories and viewpoints that reflects the diversity of my classroom. Having a diverse classroom library will ensure that all of my students will be able to find a book that they truly love. I want my students to develop into able, confident readers. If my students can even just begin to develop of love of reading, it will be tremendous for them going on in both their educational and personal lives.
