6th Grade students will be working on a problem-based collaborative group project to create a tissue paper hot air balloon through collaborative skill building. Students will complete several mini-challenge activities to build collaborative skills such as taking-turns, active listening, and leadership. This learning is taking place in Advisement classes, not in academic classes, so students are able to practice these skills without academic repercussions. Students will need all their best collaborative learning to research, design, test, redesign, and launch their own tissue paper hot air balloons. These groups will develop great collaboration skills over time to be successful in this endeavor. The balloon launcher will allow students the opportunity to practice their collaborative skills. They will need to plan around its dimensions and capacity for the size of their balloons, use it to test their models, and then work together to redesign a better balloon. The project is about the launcher! The launcher is integral for students being able to practice their collaborative skills. Without this, they won't be able to launch their balloons. They need a large, exciting event to make practicing and learning collaborative skills different than typical class work.
