The materials I am requesting will significantly improve the STEAM Science Center we have begun building in my Transitional Kindergarten classroom this year. I wish I could take each one of these children to the zoo and the science museum so they could have an opportunity to see the animals and to touch bones, fossils, nests, footprints, x-rays, and other specimens. This is the next best thing. Materials, such as the viewers and the specimens, will give my students a chance to see, touch, and learn about insects and animals.
Five year old students are extremely curious and active and they need a variety of Hands-On materials to explore. I want to give my students the chance to experience exciting activities such as planning, engineering and testing the water pipe systems and the chain reaction materials. These open-ended materials are perfect for the children to work with as they learn important concepts like gravity, force, pushes and pulls. Through trial and error, my students will gain valuable experiences which will help them have a better understanding of the world around them and will lay a foundation for them to better appreciate and comprehend science concepts in the future.
STEAM activities also serve as a bridge for my second language learners to practice their new language. As students work together to solve problems, they become more confident in sharing and expressing themselves. I have watched students speak up and find a voice as they work in a group with these types of materials. I have observed quiet children begin to ask questions and even explain the process to other students.
