  • Read To Succeed

    Funded Jul 21, 2017

So far we have gotten through our first book, Sweetgrass Basket by Marlene Carvell. The students were sucked in by the idea that children were ripped from their families and shipped off to boarding schools until they were adults just because they were Native Americans. They begged me to dig deeper to find more information on this topic. So we accessed or Discovery Education account and found video documentaries with people sharing their first hand accounts of their terrible experiences.

I wanted my students to be interested in history and that is why I created this project. However, they did more than that, they began to care beyond the events and feel compassion and empathy for the people involved. My biggest challenge in this project so far is actually coming up with enough activities and resources to feed their thirst of inquiry into the topic.

Thank you so much for making all this possible through your generosity and kindness. Actions like yours have not gone unnoticed and I believe people like you are the catalysts to the positive change our country needs.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Olson

In a time that we see so much negativity and sadness, you all have brought a level of happiness and joy to a classroom and their teacher that is unspeakable. You are all real life angels and should all be celebrated for your amazing generosity. Thank you so much.”

These materials will make a dynamic difference in my students' learning about history by reading biographies and historical fiction stories about the people during time periods we study in 5th grade. We will be using literature circles to analyze the information read in these books. The students will create novel studies to show their understanding . These books will provide my students additional points of view to analyze the accounts of history that we are studying. Having this project funded would put a copy of each book in the students hands to help them relive the important events of history.
