My diverse students benefit when they read books with a theme to which they can relate and understand. Crenshaw tells the story of a boy who had an imaginary friend (a cat) who supports him through a difficult time of homelessness. Our school has a fairly high percentage of homeless students, and many will be able to relate (with their first-hand experience) to this book. Empathy develops through reading fiction, and our youth today are in great need of developing this important character trait. An additional benefit of this book is that it is written at a level for my struggling readers.
