Many of my students struggle with all aspects of reading and writing. It is very hard work for them. Most of them like creating something and get excited if not joyful at the prospect. Recently I got a huge hug from a boy to whom I had given a cardboard box to use on his break to cut up and decorate. By giving them these opportunities we notice an increase in the ability to concentrate on more difficult academic tasks. Many of my students have experienced childhood trauma and activities that bring joy and self pride into their lives strengthen them mentally and emotionally. They look forward to our art and project day when we get to be creative and create. We incorporate reading, writing and math into all of our activities. I chose a variety of materials that we can use creatively throughout the year. The STEAM Kits will allow us to integrate STEM with arts and crafts. My students often are unable to have science activities but benefit from them. We will use literature about dreams and make dream catchers. Students who have trauma in their lives need comforting stories that bring peace to their dreams. We will use the accordion books to make picture dictionaries of our sight words. The nature print paper will be used to compare and contrast the shapes of leaves. We will use the diffusing butterfly paper when we study compound words including butterfly. After going to the aquarium in the Spring we will write about our experiences and illustrate them using the sea life diffusing paper.
