After-School Enrichment Technology Center
Funded Jan 23, 2019Here is a belated thank you for funding my after-school enrichment center. We hit our goal, and I've since gone on to help a variety of SMS students on a nearly daily basis after school during in-person instruction! Having this technology has significantly contributed to improving my students' organization, work quality, and timeliness with respect to assignment submission. They look forward to attending and organizing their academic lives with the technology you paid for. This is all thanks to you...SMS appreciates your support, as do I!”
With gratitude,
Mr. Gopal
Polyphony: A Student-Run Publishing House
Funded Mar 1, 2017When we approached our teachers, Mr. Gordon and Mr. Gopal, with a plan to create a student-run publishing house, we knew they'd be enthusiastic, but we weren't sure what resources we could access. After all, an autonomous publishing house requires dedicated hardware and software for compiling and editing copy, designing publications, and printing issues. We're thrilled to say that the generous folks at Think it Up and Donors Choose helped us purchase a computer with the necessary capacity to facilitate professional-quality work.
With school-based funds, we've purchased a subscription to the Adobe Suite, which has the software package used by professional illustrators, graphic designers, and layout artists. Mr. Gordon has some facility with the program, so we've been able to learn from him and start creating mock-ups of some of the pieces we're most passionate about putting into print. Most importantly, this software is robust enough for us to realize our collective aesthetic in the form of a literary journal.
The fact that we can make something that so clearly matches our artistic and social perspective is easily the most rewarding part of having this technology. Over the summer, we plan to conclude the vetting process and finish designing a first issue with stories, poetry, and nonfiction that hangs together as a snapshot of young New Yorkers' ideas, fears, and hopes regarding community in present-day America. We can't wait to send a copy to each of the generous donors who made this dream a reality.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Gopal
