My students love to get their hands on things! There is something about touching things with their hands, that helps my students learn. Whenever they get into the room they are always so eager and interested in what I have on their desk. They can't help but touch and explore the things that they see. The alphabet tub items and phonemic awareness manipulatives will not only help my students work on letter sounds and literacy skills but it will also help to build their language. We can use the items during pretend play, describe the items, and discuss what we notice about how the items are the same or different. Having physical manipulatives to help my students learn their letters, letter sounds, and phonemic awareness skills will make learning more fun and increase engagement. There's something special about learning that involves items that you can be immersed in. If a picture is with a thousand words, then an experience is worth a million. My students would love to learn using physical items to explore and investigate. Early literacy skills are so important. Since my students have speech and language challenges, they are highly at risk for reading difficulties. Learning language and literacy skills will help them to grow, and will open so many more doors to them. If we teach pre-reading skills and ignite their passion for learning to read early, their knowledge will grow exponentially.
