Using stability balls as an alternative for a four-legged chair is an increasingly popular idea in the classroom. My fourth graders will benefit from these exercise balls. They are intelligent and "wiggly" boys and girls. While I encourage the students to stand behind their desks to work, many are not comfortable with it. Despite frequent brain breaks to refresh their minds, they are expected to sit in their seats and work for the vast majority of the day. This is an almost impossible expectation for very active students!
Using an exercise ball in lieu of a chair engages a student's body and mind, thus making learning more effective. This is especially helpful with students who have ADD/ADHD. Students are able to move and balance on the ball while focusing on their classwork.
I strive to make sure my students have the best learning experience. These stabilizing balls will increase the learning opportunities for these students. Those who are too self conscious to stand and work from behind their desk will have an outlet for their wiggles. All students will benefit from the balance and increased opportunities for focus and learning.
