Students like to experiment and like to cook, but do not like to sit still to learn fractions. There is a big craze right now of "bath bombs" for use in the bath tub. Some people might remember using Epsom salts, but this is the designer version. Bath bombs use citric acid, Epsom salts and baking soda along with essential oils to make them smell great. If my students cannot sit to learn the math, let's make it practical and tangible. My students will be able to get a real recipe to make a bath bomb and have to measure out the ingredients and mix them. It will be a science experiment for those that do not want to follow the recipe to the letter. Others will be able to create beautiful art with the food coloring and different shapes. Having the students get hands on with an experiment that can be used a present for someone they love, or a nice relaxation for themselves when they get home will make math more permanent in their brains.
