The question that is currently driving my project is how to enhance student learning by bridging the gap between home and school in regard to mathematics education. I am seeking an effective way in which to increase the academic support and resources available for families to utilize at home in order to support students’ understanding of mathematics. In order to address the challenge, this project seeks to acquire the materials needed within math manipulative kits for first grade learners to provide resources and learning tools to be used within their home environment. In addition to the kits, an informational website will be developed to share mathematics resources with the community. The website will include information about the tools provided within the kits as well as learning activities and games that can be played at home to enhance student learning in an interactive way. Important learning targets will also be described and paired with resource videos to explicitly show effective ways that family members can help their child develop an understanding of foundational math concepts at home. To determine the list of manipulatives to provide within the kits, I met with the first grade professional learning community as well as the district math specialist. Together we determined areas of specific learning development within the early elementary grades to ensure that proper resources would be provided for parents and guardians within the manipulative kits that target these learning benchmarks. Based on these discussions, I am asking for a variety of supplies and resources including a hand2mind Rekenreks Class Set, four packs of Canvas Tote Bags, two Dry Erase Lapboard Class Packs, a Scotch Thermal Laminator with Laminating Pouches, two Sand Timer Sets, 24 Decks of Playing Cards, and a ream of Astrobrights Color Card Stock. By working collaboratively with families of my students and support staff within my district, I hope to enhance the home and school connection in order to effectively support students’ mathematical development outside of the classroom. My ultimate goal is to provide learning tools and an electronic resource bank to families that they will find extremely helpful for many years to come.
