Many special needs children see the world with their fingertips. They learn best through “doing” and “feeling” activities. Also, some special needs children have challenges with their sensory skills and may have unusual habits when it comes to touch. Classrooms can be loud and students can become overstimulated and stressed out. My students attend classes with their peers who do not have disabilities. This means that sometimes the classroom environment becomes too much, and students need an outlet to get the excess energy and nervousness out. Many children can rarely sit still. It is not because they do not want to but because they simply cannot. These children have an uncontrollable urge to move or fidget. Their overwhelming need of movement is beyond their control. Punishment is counterproductive. For many, their brains are telling their bodies to get up and move to help them listen and attend BETTER. The Fidgets, Chair bands, and sensory items will provide students with self-regulation tools to help with focus, attention, calming, and active listening. Sensory Items assist with providing a caring, calm nurturing environment for students who become overstimulated. The office items are to organize sensory items within the classroom.
