My students are reading far below grade level. They struggle for many reasons poor background knowledge, gaps in education, English as a second language, no reinforcement at home among other things. As their reading teacher, I have to complete a daily reading program with them that is required by our district. While effective, the program can be a little...boring. I'm trying to find ways to supplement the reading program with fun hands on activities. I want my students to be excited about reading! These activities will allow students to reinforce what they are learning, in a engaging way. Instead of just sounding out and reading words on the board, students will be able to build words with the Magnetic Word Building Boards. Instead of writing out words with the same ending sound on a sheet of paper, students can practice this skill with the Change a Sound Flip Book. We are accomplishing much needed skills, but in an interactive way. I want my students to be excited about how they are growing as readers. Using these materials will help them grow, and enjoy the process of becoming a better reader.
