Instead of repressing emotions and carrying the burden of trauma alone, I want young women of color to heal through shared storytelling, community building, and by finding their voices through empowering workshops, mentoring, fun activities, and classes. Quetzalli Mariposas’ curriculum was created on three core principles: mind, spirit, and body. This club meets weekly for 2-3 hours to address the 3 core principles.
Members of Quetzalli Mariposas will embark on a journey of self-discovery and enlightenment in which they will first learn how to heal the mind, body, and spirit. This means that we will cover topics such as reducing stress and coping with anxiety and depression in a healthy manner. To address the other two components (spirit and body), members of Quetzalli Mariposas will also learn about meditation, body positivity, women empowerment, etc.
This project will help me raise funds for a "healing goodie bag" that includes Rupi Kaur's poetry book, "Milk and Honey," so that all of the members of Quetzalli Mariposas can own her beautiful work that addresses the healing process. My goal is to use Rupi's poems as a catalyst to the discussions and topics that we will be covering during each session. As an educator I believe that having spaces like these are essential to a student’s holistic development. Only when a student is emotionally and mentally well will they be able to focus in the classroom and achieve academic success without the added weight that their counterparts from privileged communities do not have to carry.
