  • Great-ly Improving Student Literacy with Literature Circles

    Funded Nov 10, 2015

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald has made a significant impact in my classroom, being used in literature circles (small group discussions) that allowed/facilitated students thoughtfully interacting with a great book. It was awesome to see my students so thoroughly engaged in discussion with a valuable resource, funded by your generous contribution to Donors Choose, and it has generated energy and momentum in class that I have seen spill over into other classroom activities. You have made a huge difference in my classroom. Thank you.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Gibson

  • Using Chromebook Tech To Enhance Student Literacy

    Funded Sep 22, 2015

Each and everyone of my student has the aspiration of graduating from our college-prep high, school being eligible for a 4-year university, and begin work their path to a college degree. Before this proposal was funded, the majority of my students did not have sufficient access to computers because they do not have them in their homes. I have seen significant results from having this Chromebook in my classroom. Thank you for contributing to the funding of this project so that I can work everyday for my students to reach for a college education.”

  • Using Literature Circles to Improve Student Literacy

    Funded Feb 23, 2010

It has been incredible to see my students demonstrate a love of literature while reading Barbara Kingsolver's The Bean Trees in small groups. I used these books to teach my students the roles and responsibilities of literature circles, which is an approached developed by Harvey Daniels to help students become more engaged and energetic readers. Many of my students admitted after we were finished a book before my class and that is the first obstacles the have faced and overcome on the their path to college. Thank you.”

I teach 9th grade English at a college-prep high school the requires that all students follow a course of study that leads to a university or college. However, many of the students in my classes are not prepared for the rigors of this level of academic challenge. I believe it is my task to prepare them. In addition, a majority of my students live below the designated poverty line. My students lack access to technology that can be used for completing essay and research papers. My students really try the best they can as they move towards college. But, they need a little help.
