In today's world, kindergarten is as rigorous as any other grade. Our kids are exposed to such a greater amount of information than our generation, or those generations before me, ever had been. They are smarter and more active than ever before. They need the appropriate environment to do so and determine what kind of learning style will work best for them. At our school, we challenged to meet the needs of every student and the teachers work hard to individualize learning. This year I am going to focus on flexible seating options and cooperative learning in my classroom. I hope that adding choice and flexibility will motivate my students to work harder, while keeping them on task. I have replaced our desks with team tables, but would love flexible carpet squares, wobble stools, scoop rockers and stability balls, as well! I have chosen the carpet squares because they can easily be used in whole group or individual instruction! We can begin our lesson as a whole, seating together, but students can then break off with their individual square wherever they would feel most motivated to work in the room! The wobble stools help those students who just can't seem to sit still to focus on their task and not worry about the constant reminders to stop tipping back in their chairs. Scoop rockers provide a snug environment in which to sit with a book or work together in partner groups. The stability balls will be used at my small group table to keep our focus on reading and let all other energy out through movement on the balls. Thank you in advance for your interest and help!
