Many of my students have disabilities, are English Language Learners, come from disadvantaged homes, and live in environments that many adults wouldn't be able to bear to hear let alone live in. Most of their situations are out of their control and school is their "safe" place. For many, I am one of the only stable and consistent adults in their lives and I only have them for 2 years. And yet...they show up almost every day with smiles, laughter, and positive hope.
