Ms. Olivo's Little Bookworms

Funded Feb 28, 2017

My students learned reading skills while enjoying a book they love. Not only did this book help my students learn concepts, such as identifying main ideas, making inferences, and character analysis (just to name a few), but it also taught them the meaning of empathy and friendship. The book, along with the first book Wonder, taught my students to be kind to one another. They learned that even though some people might look different from them, they should always respect and be kind.

I personally love reading. I look forward to my cozy couch and warm blanket to read. I try to make my classroom, especially the reading/library center, as comfortable and relaxing for my students. I have a carpet and pillows so students can enjoy a good book. They look forward to checking out a book from the classroom library, laying on the the carpet, and be immersed and mesmerized with their book.

I had students that were reluctant readers. When we read the novel, Wonder (the first book to Auggie and Me), they absolutely loved it. They couldn't wait to read it everyday. When I found out there was a second book to our favorite novel, I wanted each one of my students to have one, especially my reluctant readers. When they got their book, they wanted to read it immediately. My reluctant readers had become accomplished readers. This is a teacher's greatest gift- a child learning to love reading!”

With gratitude,
