Students will learn about owls and other birds of prey as they explore animals in a food chain and feed web. Students will discover that an owl pellet is formed during the digestion process and regurgitated. During the dissecting process, students will inspect the outside texture, color, size, and shape of the owl pellet. Then, they will gently break the pellet in half and continue to pull it apart into smaller pieces. Next, they will use a dissecting tool to carefully separate the bones from the fur or feathers. Once they have the bones exposed, they will use a magnifying glass to examine and group them. Using a dichotomous key, students will identify the different prey animals in the pellet. Once students have identified the bones, they can then sort them according to the animal by examining the skulls and teeth. This will help students to reconstruct a skeleton. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify the relationships among producers, consumers, and decomposers in an ecosystem.
