My 4th students are learning to think more critically about literature. This year they have been making great strides in developing inferences, figuring out unknown words using context clues, identifying differing perspectives and themes, and participating in discussions on controversial topics that require deeper-level thinking supported by evidence. "When you read a book as a child, it becomes part of your identity in a way that no other reading in your whole life does." By donating to this project, you would be providing my students with the opportunity to participate in a novel study where they would be able to integrate the skills they have developed this year. Doing a novel study using "Island of the Blue Dolphins" will allow our class to go deeper into a text. Students will be able to create complex inferences, and draw on the knowledge developed this year though our Native American and California missions units. It will allow us to have more meaningful discussions about how characters are developed and changed throughout a novel; further, they will be able to discuss and develop controversial opinions about theme. With a class set of this novel, I would be able to model expressive reading while students follow along in their individual books. As over half of my students are English language learners, this experience is invaluable. Overall, my hope is that this novel allows my students and I to further develop a love for reading together.
