A deficit in social skills and self-regulation can greatly impact a student's ability to socialize with peers and to learn. By providing a space that offers students somewhere that they can go to learn these essential skills and to de-escalate when necessary, I can better prepare them for the learning environment. Many of our students' first social experiences take place in our school, and my role as a school counselor is to provide them opportunities to develop these skills both in individual settings and small group counseling. These items will be used in small group counseling and one-on-one sessions to build teamwork, problem solving and self-regulation skills. They will also be used to provide students in social emotional crises a safe space to de-escalate and work through heightened emotions.
