These materials will help to engage my students! It creates an opportunity to work on communication, attention, sensory needs, social skills, following directions, etc. My students need to experience things in many different ways in order to learn. It's important for students to have hands on experiences! These materials will be used with the sensory stories and within related activities both within therapy and in the classroom. Sensory stories are a unique way to engage students who have a variety of communication needs! It creates an opportunity to work with classroom teachers, occupational therapists, parents, etc. so a child can begin to truly learn and use skills throughout their daily lives. Sensory stories can be used to target a wide variety of skills with students who may have very different needs and they are a lot of fun too!! Sand will allow kids to step into it with their feet while hearing about the beach and a hula hoop might have something hanging from it around the child or might be for movement! Puppets will make stories come to life as the characters talk to the kids. Cold/hot packs are to touch when temperature is part of the story, a rain stick to make the rain sound, and scarfs or wands to dance to different kinds of music with or to make magic with! Instruments to create our own music, textures that feel like something from the story, beads to touch, or lights that glow and vibrate, it all makes the stories come to life! In addition, laminating pouches and velcro will allow us to create pictures that can be used for communication and various activities with the story. These allow the materials to be much more durable and therefore can be used for multiple students over time!
