My students are from one of the poorest and most violent cities in the country. As a special education teacher, I work to teach them that there is a bigger world out there than the one they see every day, that they matter, and that they will always have a safe place to explore the world around them in our classroom. To help keep them out of trouble and off the streets, develop and maintain an invaluable daily living skill, meal preparation and promote cultural sensitivity and diversity, we are developing a Cultural culinary cooking class. The class will also help to expose my students to international dishes from around the world, create real life work situations, learn to cook healthy meals, and improve on the skills needed for for future employment.
