Middle school students are undergoing enormous changes in their personal lives and at the same time we have increased the expectation for success. My 7th graders and I meet for 30 minutes of advisory time at the end of each day. During this time we've been setting goals and mapping their paths to achieve success. However, not every student arrives in 7th grade with the same organizational tools and growth mindset for success.
Sean Covey's 7 Habits for Highly Effective Teens will provide us with a common map to follow for a successful 7th grade year. Reading, discussing and practicing the 7 Habits together will give each of my advisory students life long tools for success. The book offers vignettes of teenagers which my students will be able to relate to, reflection exercises, and common language to use when we discuss their progress toward their goals.
Habit One, Be Proactive offers students examples and strategies for taking control of their reactions. In fact, it teaches them to be change agents, rather than reactive and just letting things happen to them. The book covers 6 other habits: Two, Begin with the End in Mind; Three, Put First Things First; Four, Think Win-Win; Five, Seek First To Understand; Six, Synergize; and, Seven, Sharpen the Saw. Had I a book like this in my life as an early teen, it would have saved me a lot of the time I spent figuring out good habits on my own, not to mention a lot of headaches from mistakes I made. This book will be used as our foundation for the rest of the school year and when my students head to 8th grade and later high school, they will much closer to the stars they aim for!
