I have made it my goal this semester to find reading material that is more relevant to my students' lives and interests. My students crave literature that is engaging and I think you would be hard pressed to find something more engaging for eight graders than a graphic novel. Many students of mine have expressed a clear interest in this literary form. No graphic novel could be more important to today's classroom than John Lewis and Andrew Aydin's MARCH. While most students are probably familiar with the Civil Rights movement, they may not know about John Lewis's contribution to this important time in American History. I believe that my students will benefit greatly from learning about this man and his accomplishments, while also engaging with a book which will be right on their level. John Lewis has made headlines recently due to his disagreements with President Trump, making this book and his life's work even more relevant to my students. It is my hope that my students will not only be able to see the importance of MARCH for what it was then, but also how it can relate to our lives and world now. Engagement is not easy in education, but I think having a classroom set of this book for my students will help to get them more interested in studying literature.
