This classroom project was brought to life by PNC Grow Up Great® and 21 other donors.Independent and Interactive!
Funded Jul 26, 2020We are SO thankful for your support towards our project! My classroom is a much safer place because the students now have a space to store their own materials. They love working in their interactive binders and it has been so nice for them to have something of their own to work on!
I sent these binders home with the students when we returned to remote learning at the end of November. These binders include activities with all of the foundational skills that we work on throughout the year. I have already seen student growth in their understanding of the content in the short time they have been using their binders at home.
I hope when we return to the classroom my students will continue to use their binders at home and I will be able to continue to send supplemental work home to increase their learning and engagement . Thank you again for helping my preschoolers grow into strong and independent learners during this crazy school year!”

iListen on Ipods!
Funded Oct 12, 2017Thank you so much for your donations towards the ipods and audio books for my classroom. My students are loving their new station and have so much fun listening to different stories each day! When my students arrive at their listen to reading station they begin by picking a reading box. Inside each box is an ipod, a pair of headphones, and 3 books. All the students have to do is press play and enjoy their story! My students have quickly learned how to use the ipods and know how to change the story if they have already listened to it, or go back if they want to listen to a story again.
What I love most about having ipods in my room is that all of my students enjoy and know how to use them properly. Even my students who are identified as special education or as English Language Leaners love coming to the listen to reading station and enjoying a new story, their favorite to listen to is Brown Bear Brown Bear by Bill Martin Jr.
I wanted to thank you all once again for making an investment into my classroom and into the education of my little learners. Exposure to books and reading is such an important part of our day and their development into strong students. I cannot wait to see how these books and ipods impact my students this year and many years to come.”

Little Learners, Big Books - Literacy Lab in Our Room
Funded Jan 24, 2017My class is LOVING their new tools for reading and writing. We use the phones every day when a small group comes to my station during literacy work stations. As a class we are working on sounding out consonant- vowel- consonant (CVC) words. During stations they pick, or I show them a card with a CVC picture on it, then they have the opportunity to sound out the word for me and their peers. My students get so excited to hear their own voice and it's great practice for them. We have read 2 or 3 of our new big books so far. I like to use them during whole group reading, or as an end end of the day treat. One of our favorite activities to do with the big books is finding sight words. I was kindly donated some highlighter tape by another teacher. This highlighter tape allows students to find and physically "highlight" sight words, or any other type of word we might be looking for in a story. They love being able to come up to the book and pretend to be the teacher as they show the rest of the class what they have found. My students have not had too much of a chance to use the new writing boards yet, but I plan to include them as an option at our writing center next month. Some things the students might practice writing on this board include: sight words, color words, and seasonal words such as St. Patrick's Day or Spring.
When the package first arrived to our room, I was so excited and they were very curious as to what was in the package. I gathered the whole class in a circle on the carpet and chose the 3 students who had the best behavior for the day and allowed them to open it. As my little friends dug into the box, the rest of the class was eager to see what was inside. When they pulled out phones, writing books, and writing boards I heard lots of "wows" and "what are those?". As I explained what these new tools were, and how we got them ( thanks to you!), I let the students pass around the phones and boards to test. And of course we got started reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear right away. Though we use these tools almost daily now, the excitement still has not gone down about them.
Now that my project has been funded our class is continuing to work on those core kindergarten fundamental skills.
Some of these skills including sounding out/spelling CVC words, identifying sight words, and beginning reading skills.
Thanks to you and your generous donations my students are on the right track to finish kindergarten strong and become ready for first grade!”
