According to the National School Board Association's Center for Public Education, (BEYOND FICTION: The importance of reading for information, 2014) "Compared to their international peers, American students are actually quite good readers of literature. Yet, their performance falls dramatically when asked to read for information." The goal of this project is to increase the amount of non-fiction texts available in the classroom, both in traditional free reading novels and in newspaper/magazines. I am asking for a copy of the March trilogy as well as fourteen books including copies of The Port Chicago 50: Disaster, Mutiny, and the Fight for Civil Rights; Laughing at My Nightmare; and Charles and Emma: The Darwins' Leap of Faith, These materials will be used during free reading time to expand the enjoyment of reading from fiction to non-fiction; subscriptions to the magazines will allow us to pull out current, relevant sources of text outside of the literary canon to practice reading strategies applicable to real world/work related readings.
