Our school has been deemed uninhabitable for at least a year due to mold. Since early January, we have been sharing a campus with a local high school. So our STEM challenge will be to re-design our old school and transform it into the school of their dreams. Along with math applications and careers, I will incorporate an imaginative part to support our students in being excited about their future and bring fun to our class. Students will work through the engineering design process, beginning with identifying things they would like to change about our old school. Students will then work in groups using math and engineering to draft their designs. Finally, students will present their designs to their classmates. Students will use the behavioral chart to track their group's progress as they design the school of their dreams. We will use the printer to create "vision boards" that show student's ideas for new features for our dream school. The magnetic pocket charts will serve as Word Walls for each of my 6th and 8th grade classes where we capture new vocabulary learned through our lessons pertaining to this unit. We will use the plastic bins as storage for our robotics classes as they develop original technology to go into our pretend dream school. The timers will be used to keep students on track during their individual design assignments. The art supplies will be used for students to make physical models of their designs. The white boards with easels will be used for group brainstorming and for giving constraints for their design challenges. Since my classroom has all tables, the partitions will help students stay focused when we assess their knowledge through daily demonstrations of learning and during quizzes.
