This list of books I am requesting for my students includes readers for emergent readers grades K-2 that are specifically designed for English language learners in addition to high interest low reading level books for middle school English language learners just beginning to learn English as a second language. These are two key resources to help support our students in the lower and uppermost grades in our K-8 school. Reading is a great way for English Language Learners and newcomers to solidify key vocabulary and high-frequency words in order to gain fluency. Leveled readers allow for literacy and language intervention and support for readers with low levels of proficiency in English in addition to helping build confidence in emergent English readers. It is crucial that the language used is specifically tailored to students who are emergent readers who are also learning English as a second language, such as provided in the readers and books featured in this list. The leveled readers for English language learners in grades K-2 are grouped in six to accommodate the group pull-out setting in which our English instruction for lowest proficiency English language learners occurs. The high-interest low reading level books for middle school students begin from a Pre-K reading level, but feature books of 48 page length, allowing students who are just entering an English-only academic environment to begin reading entire books in a foreign language. These students will read these books individually with one-on-one support from an instructor, but they will also be provided for students to choose from and read in class during independent reading time.
