Education has changed. Yet, traditional desks and chairs are still found in many classrooms. As adults, we find it hard to sit for long periods of time without moving, getting up to stretch, doodling, or fidgeting. Yet, we expect our students to do just that - sit still. As teachers, we differentiate reading groups, math manipulatives, tests, daily instruction, and much more, but not our seating. It's time to make that change, for our students. Having a variety of sitting options will allow for me to meet the needs of all my students. Wobble chairs, stability balls, beanbag chairs, stools, wobble cushions, and bouncy bands will do just that. They allow students to make smart choices about what type of seating will work best for them. They are encouraged to find a seat where they are comfortable and can work collaboratively or independently. At the same time, teaching self-control, respect, and smart decision making. Throughout a day, I find myself asking students to sit down, so those behind them can see. I watch students rock in their traditional chairs, only to have them fall off. I watch top students try to find a spot where they can move throughout an entire lesson, yet not miss a word of instruction. My students want to learn, but they also want to move. They need to move! Let's say goodbye to desks and chairs and hello to individualized, flexible seating.
