Our intervention program targets the big ideas of reading. We focus on fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, phonics and phonemic awareness. Each student (grades 1-3) has a lesson plan tailored to his level and learning needs. They participate four days per week and are matched to a high school tutor. The high school students who mentor receive ongoing training and support so that they may, in turn, support their young "buddy". All students love the 1 to 1 ratio and personal interactions found in the tutoring session. Magic happens as smiles and success abounds. The little readers feel successful because they are reading on their own level and have a friend right beside them, cheering them on. Over the last three years of this program, most students receiving intervention gain at least one grade level in reading, and some even gain two. The project has a proven track record of success. The one weakness of this program is what to do when mentors are absent. Until now, primary students are sent back to their classes and do not receive intervention for the day. If funded, this project will provide supports for the students so no intervention is missed. My students need iPads to allow reading intervention to continue even when their reading tutor is absent for the day. Through our online reading supports, the students will never have to miss a tutoring session again.
