Our first bell rings at 7:05am welcoming students into our school. The tardy bell rings at 7:30am. You can only imagine how hectic the morning is with students arriving, eating breakfast, parents popping in and out, etc. However, the morning is also one of the most important times of a school day!!
Our mornings are used as a time for students to unpack, organize their materials, and mentally prepare for the school day ahead. In a perfect world all of our students would be in their seats and ready to learn by the time the tardy bell rings but let's face it, it never happens. This is where our "Morning Work" comes into play.
In the past, my students would have some type of worksheet or writing journal to complete. My philosophy behind this was to use it as a way to keep students calm and fairly quiet before our day began. It was a way to put them into "school mode". I always had the same students complete the morning work just like I always had the same students who wouldn't. The early finishers were always looking for something else to do and the others were bored. Yes, bored.
This project would allow my students to say goodbye to boring morning work and hello to hands on creating!
Every morning each table would have a different container with various supplies inside. For example, Table 1 would have the Creative Legos Brick Set, Table 2 would have art supplies, Table 3 would have AlphaMagnets Lowercase Letters, and Table 4 would have KEVA Brain Builders. The students are free to create and work cooperatively with classmates. This allows their little minds and bodies to wake up before another wonderful day of 2nd grade begins!
