  • Engineering Tools for 9th Grade Physical Science!

    Funded Mar 27, 2016

    Dear Donors,

My students and I cannot thank you enough for your extreme generosity in funding our project! After receiving the tool kits, glue guns, saws and electric drills, we have been able to do many new projects that would never have been possible without your help! The students were able to design and build their own musical instruments, which included guitars made from wood and PVC pipe, wooden and PVC flutes, and even beautiful harps made using special wires, and constructed from wood and plastic. The students have also been able to create their own cardboard cars, egg drop machines, and even were able to improve on their Rube Goldberg machines by having access to these amazing tools! We were able to spend time teaching the students the correct and safe way to use these tools, since as 9th graders many of them have never used drills, saws and wrenches before! It has been so exciting!

The students were very excited when they saw the tool kits and glue guns! They had been sharing a few glue guns that we had bought, and my drill from home to use before this, which is very difficult with classes of thirty students. They were thrilled to be able to learn to use the tools, and were so proud of their musical instruments that many of them took pictures of themselves with the instruments and even brought them home!

Having these awesome tools has opened up so many opportunities for the students that we would not have had before. We can now build model airplanes this year, which is something that would not have been possible without the tool kits and glue guns. We are also planning to build energy efficient model homes as a final project, which we can only do because we have power drills, wire strippers and other tools need to construct and wire our model homes. The tools we have received open up so many amazing opportunities for our Physical Science classes, and we are so grateful to have them! Thank you all for your help!”

  • Lab Tables for Chemistry and Biology Classroom!

    Funded Mar 1, 2011

After receiving our lab table, my students and I are incredible grateful for this gift! Most of my students have never seen a professional lab table, and couldn't wait to use it for our experiments. They even helped me assemble it when it came in the mail. One of the first experiments we performed was a comparative anatomy dissection of four different animals, something that would not have been safe to perform on our current student tables. The students were so excited, and gained valuable knowledge about the body systems of different species of animals.

In chemistry class, we have used the table multiple times to conduct various experiments, many of which I was unable to conduct previously due to safety concerns regarding our old student tables. One of the best experiments we did this year was testing the flammability of different common substances, such as perfumes, cleaning products, and hand sanitizers. Since the table is fireproof and chemical resistant, we can burn the substances directly on the surface of the table, and observe the color of the flame and the time it took all of the substance to burn. Other experiments we conducted involved heating and cooling to create crystals using a hot plate, and later this year, we will be determining the concentrations of acids and bases using the process of titration.

All of these experiments would not be possible if it were not for all of your donations. My students and I are so grateful for this gift, and we will continue to use this table for years to come. Thank you again for helping to improve science education for all of my students.

  • Amazing Lab Kit and Workbooks for My AP Students!

    Funded Dec 6, 2006

I cannot express my immense gratitude for providing my students with these essential supplies. My students were so excited when I told them we would be receiving these workbooks along with the lab kit. They are so proud to be in an AP class, and now we can finally complete the necessary labs that will allow them to develop a better understanding of the advanced concepts that we are learning in class. Thank you so much for everything. I could never have afforded these supplies on my own, and my students, many of whom are from low income families, would not have been able to buy these books on their own. Thank you once again”

    With gratitude,

  • Lab Supplies for an AP Chemistry Class

    Funded Jun 6, 2006

I cannot express the gratitude I feel at this moment! For the first time, my students will be able to perform many of the labs that were impossible to do before. Because summer vacation is starting soon, and my students will not begin to use the materials until September, we will be sending our feedback to you in the fall. I am so excited to see the looks on my student's faces when I tell them the good news!! Thank you so much for helping me and my students in making our dreams come true!

    Sincerely,

    Cheryl ”

My students are a wonderful, hardworking group of 9th graders that have rarely had the opportunity to learn about the magic of science and engineering. As an engineering magnet school, we are teaching these students how to design and build from their imagination, and giving them a sense of confidence and pride in their abilities. May of my students have never used basic tools, and many more have never had the opportunity to create projects from their own ideas. My students love to engineer, and they thrive on building and creating rather than simply reading about these ideas in a book. Since we are an inner city school, we have very limited resources, which really limits the types of projects that we can pursue.
