Calming Area
Funded Feb 6, 2023"Mrs. Romero, what is this? Is this for us? It's so cool and looks so comfy. Can we sit there?" The excitement was palpable. It was hard to control the excitement the first couple of days. The smiles on their faces were priceless!
I had a hard time deciding how exactly to implement the "calming area" into my classroom but eventually decided to let the process be organic and allow students to ask for permission when they felt they should use the space. Some students need it for a break when they are feeling overwhelmed. They might use it for a quick nap, to do some coloring, or to sit and listen to music. Some ask to sit in the comfy chairs to do their work. Students that often weren't productive, now sit there and get things done because they know they are given the privilege's as long as they are working. At times it is used as a reward for students who have completed all of their work. Some of my students even enjoy caring for our new class plants.
Most importantly the space makes my classroom an inviting place for students to be. Half the battle is often just getting the students into the classroom and this is one more tool I can use to get them here.
We could not be more greatful for your kindness and generosity. I posted pictures and the students wrote thank you's on the link below. We'd love for you to take a look.
