Each unit of our reading curriculum has a theme; for example the theme of the unit we will be starting in January is "What Matters: Sometimes standing up for what is right means refusing to back down". For each unit, I pick (and read) five books that are related to the theme and engaging for my students. High interest novels are not always readily available at my school and I often end up finding and purchasing the books on my own. I do everything I can to make sure the books I choose fit the range of reading levels my students have, are engaging for my kids, and provide opportunities for discussions and reflection. I would love to be able to have high interest novels that connect to each unit's theme that I can work with and incorporate into literature groups for years to come. It is so important that my students develop a healthy relationship with reading as they move forward into high school. For many of my kids, this year has been the first year they have finished an entire book from cover to cover. I want my students to enjoy reading and have the discipline needed to finish an entire novel to prepare them for high school and further education, and to also provide them with the opportunity to expand their mind and develop their own ideas as a young adult. Please donate to this project and help give these kids the resources that they deserve!
