My district has not purchased a new reading series in over 10 years and in that time education and expections of teaching have changed as well. We don't just teach from the book anymore because we know that is not best for students. Our reading series does not meet the rigor of common core and good practices of teaching. My goal is to take learning and reading beyond the text book and teach students skills they need to become successful readers. I want all my students to be able to enjoy reading through a variety of novels. I have selected some historical fiction to tie in social studies and fiction stories to teach the many elements of literature. By having a class set of the novels I can ensure each child will be actively engaged and being held accountable for their learning.
