Students with autism require a highly structured classroom incorporating individualized workstations, visual schedules, and structured routines. I have attended training based on TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication related handicapped CHildren.) I have done my best to create this classroom structure, but I'm still lacking many materials. My students need a task box system for individual workstations. A task box system enables students to independently retrieve their work, take their work to their designated workstation, complete their work independently, and then place their finished work in the designated area. It's a system based on students completing a task with zero prompting. My classroom staff and I know that prompting our students too much can create dependency. We want our students to learn how to complete tasks independently to best prepare them to enter the general education classroom. The task box system would include hands on activities to engage them, challenge them, increase their concepts of academic content, and increase their independence. I also am asking for a ten frame rug to use as both a math activity, and to add a comfortable space for my students to sit in the classroom library.
