The addition of an indoor Aerogarden will be a great teaching tool for our Native American population. Buying these Aerogardens will enable students to grow fresh herbs, vegetables and salad greens. Students will be able to plant the seed pods themselves and see the growing process, from germination of seeds to plants. Because this garden uses hydroponics, the students will learn about the importance of water to growing. I will teach how the Aerogarden LED lighting system allows the plants to maximize photosynthesis, thereby yielding rapid and natural plant growth. Plus, after the plants are grown, the students will be able to eat the products they grew and hopefully learn new eating habits. Research has shown that students who garden are encouraged make future healthier eating choices. This helps with overall health and can combat the rate of diabetes that is so prevalent in the Native American community.
This project will serve as a reminder to students and their families of the importance of the relationship between people and gardens of the Earth.
Purchasing the Back to the Roots Water garden will give students an up close view of a closed loop ecosystem. Students will learn about an aquaponic system and how Betta fish waste becomes fertilizer for the plants grown on top of the tank. They will also learn that the plants then filter and clean the water for the fish to live. This is a perfect example of how all things are related, which is an important cultural tradition.
