My students need high interest reading material to help them go from reluctant readers to lifelong learners. One of my main focuses throughout the year is increasing reading stamina. We spend at least 25 minutes each day doing what I call "active reading of great books." The students can move to a comfortable spot around the room; for some it's stretched out on the floor, for others, it's underneath their desk, and still others prefer to simply sit at their desk. Regardless of position, the task is the same; read- REALLY READ!- a book they are both actually interested in, and is at their reading level. When kids have a graphic novel in front of them, they are able to fully enter the world they are reading about, so much so they often have difficulty returning to reality! Many reluctant readers have difficulty picturing scenes from a book in their mind. Graphic novels help with this tremendously by supplying pictures along with the text. When students then choose books without graphics, they are able to transfer that skill, and create their own "graphic novel" in their mind, and ultimately increasing their ability to comprehend text. In addition to the academic benefit, graphic novels are enjoyable for kids! Providing graphic novels will enable me to hear cheers instead of groans when it is time for active reading.
