Each student will be given their own book, which will transform their experience of reading. Owning your own book instead of having a rental is a game changer because my students will be able to paint their personalities into the text, merging their consciousness with that of the author, creating a wholly new text that unique to them. The book has a dual purpose: First, each page houses its own sentence so students will be able to dig in and perform close readings of complex and compound sentence, which will help immensely in their understanding of grammar and syntax; second, themes of subjectivity and the real-life values of humility and empathy pervade the book throughout the book. The other benefit of the having one sentence per page is that there is a ton of room for kids to annotate and make their mark in the book. The content is anecdotal, accessible, and has the capacity to change their view of humans and how they fit into the world. Because the book is so engaging and "real", my students will have a reason to dig into the book and struggle with some of the limited, but challenging, language.
