Our students come to us with significant gaps in reading from phonemic awareness to comprehension. Students are increasingly required to respond to materials based on their grade level lexile band. This becomes an obstacle when students are still struggling with reading fluency skills. These books were selected to motivate an interest in reading a variety of genres. Genre diversity promotes reading comprehension, makes connections to real world experiences, and overall increase lexile levels. Students will have an opportunity to complete cooperative learning activities to integrate reading content and language through group engagement. Activities from books to be presented independently or with a partner to strengthen tiered vocabulary usage when speaking. The success of my students rely on their ability to read proficiently on grade level. Reading interest is enhanced through content being connected to real life situations.
