  • Dynomite Digital Subscriptions for Speech and Language Therapy

    Funded Dec 1, 2021

Over the past 2 school years, speech and language pathologists have had to reinvent themselves to effectively provide support to their students in a digital learning world. While we are back in the classrooms, I have discovered some vital digital resources that provide wonderful therapeutic learning opportunities for my students. These digital memberships have become an integral part of my everyday therapy sessions.

Because of you, my students will be able to continue the work we started during the remote learning period using engaging materials that they found interesting, motivating, and FUN! When students enjoy what they are doing they become active participants in learning. These digital materials will be used during our therapy sessions to teach and practice speech and language skills.

Throughout my year career as a speech and language pathologist in the New York City Public School system, I have learned that even the smallest act of kindness makes a difference in the life of a child. Your donations big or small have contributed to making a difference in bettering the lives of my students. My heart is full of joy and appreciation when I think about your generosity and how it will positively impact my teaching and my students' learning. Thank you!

THE STARFISH STORY ORIGINAL STORY BY LOREN EISLEY

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, "What are you doing?" The youth replied, "Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them back, they'll die." "Son," the man said, "don't you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can't make a difference!"

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said" I made a difference for that one."”

  • Tuning Into Speech and Language

    Funded Oct 23, 2020

2020 has certainly presented speech and language teachers with many challenges. One of the greatest challenges for me has been keeping the attention of my students during remote learning. Often times students are distracted by background noise. They can also be hard to hear with competing sound in their homes. My students needed headphones with microphones and noise cancelling features to help them attend during remote therapy sessions.

The headphones have proven to be an amazing tool for teletherapy. Parents have written to me expressing how grateful they are to have them, not only for speech and language sessions, but for all online learning. The headphones are helping my students to attend and be less distracted by competing noise. They have also helped me to communicate more effectively with my students. As a result, my students have been able to get the most out of their therapy sessions.

Your contribution to my classroom as helped my students to make progress in meeting their IEP goals. My students and I are eternally grateful for your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. H.

  • Digital Speech and Language Library

    Funded Oct 22, 2020

2020 has certainly presented speech and language teachers with many challenges. One of the greatest challenges for me has been finding digital materials that are engaging, motivating, and appropriate for practicing receptive, expressive, and pragmatic language skills as well as articulation. During the remote learning period in the spring of 2020, many companies offered free trials of their products, giving me the opportunity to use their materials and see what worked best for my students. These companies offer yearly subscriptions that offer plenty of therapy materials that are fun and effective. Your contribution has helped me to purchase a subscriptions to an entire library of digital materials.

My students enjoy working on these platforms because many of the materials are presented in a "game" format and what child doesn't like playing a game? By presenting opportunities for learning this way, my students are engaged and motivated to do their best even with a screen between us.

Your contribution to my classroom as helped my students to make progress in meeting their IEP goals. My students and I are eternally grateful for your generosity.”

  • Quiet Communication Corner

    Funded Sep 29, 2018

Just wanted to update you all on our Quiet Communication Corner. The room dividers are being utilized to create a quiet space in the room for that speech students. Other students that struggle in reading and speech and language are also using the classroom so those room dividers are not only benefiting the students that I work with but also many other children at PS 30. The students were so excited to receive the materials and to help make a space where they can focus and attend to their speech and language activities.

The magnetic divider provides a surface where my students can have a multi-sensory learning experience. My students use a multi-sensory tool called Story Grammar Marker to retell stories. It comes with magnetic symbols that can be used to retell a story. My children enjoy going up to the board with the magnetic pieces and explaining each of the story elements (characters, setting, kick-off, feelings, plan, resolution). We also use the board for magnetic manipulatives during following directions activities and to make words using magnetic tiles when engaged in teaching sound symbol association for reading skills. The magnetic divider also serves as a white board giving the students the opportunity to write words and sentences and draw pictures which they love. The magnetic/white board divider is double sided so while I am working on it with my students the other speech teacher can use it with her group of students as well.

My students and I are so grateful to have this quiet space to work in. It allows my students to work to the best of their abilities by minimizing distractions. We hope to continue building there speech and language skills and working towards achieving their goals. All of this would not be possible without your support and generosity. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. H.

My students need room dividers to create a small quiet area to focus on small group communication and improving speech and language skills. Specifically, a whiteboard room divider, can be used to enhance multisensory learning as it can be used for writing, drawing and working with magnetic hands-on manipulatives. My students are currently working in a large classroom that is shared with other students and teachers. They require a smaller, quieter space to reduce distractions and improve their attention to tasks. The whiteboard and room divider will help to section off the room into a smaller learning environment and create a quiet speech corner.
