At our school, our motto is "Those You Think Cannot.....Can!" Our students CAN learn like any other student. My students have limited communication skills. They benefit from having opportunities to explore the world around them in as many ways as possible. When learning about a math concept, such as patterning, my students need to see and create patterns using many different materials. We might make a pattern with everyday materials such as kitchen utensils or buttons. The students also need to practice the skill frequently but could use a wider variety of materials. My students enjoy "sensory" materials; these are materials that they can touch and manipulate. I am requesting sensory materials, such as sensory paint. When covering a unit of study, I often include art activities. This week, we read about "The Eagle Watch Week-end" which takes place every year in Illinois. As an extension activity, we are also learning about American symbols, such as the bald eagle. My students could use the sensory paint in order to paint a picture of a bald eagle, or create a nature scene. Another item that I am requesting are the sensory shapes. Since my students are learning basic concepts, and enjoy sensory materials, this would be a great way for them to learn about shapes. I am always looking for new ways, and varied materials, to help my students be successful at school.
