The students in my class need advanced reading materials to continue to make progress and further develop their literacy skills. Currently the majority of the students in my class read at or above grade level, but lack the materials we need to further develop their reading skills with challenging novels. In order to support my diverse classroom, I am asking for support to fund a classroom set of the novel "The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano." This novel is a work of historical fiction that centers on the experiences of a Puerto Rican girl in New York during the civil rights era. This novel would provide students the opportunity to learn about a rarely mentioned piece of the 1960s/70s civil rights movement for Latina/o/x people in the USA. A classroom set of this novel would also provide students with a challenging read, which is essential for supporting the development of their literacy and critical inquiry skills. As a teacher I'd love to have the opportunity to build instruction around this novel. We are currently working on finishing the novel "One Crazy Summer", which is similarly about the experience of three sisters during the summer of 1968. This novel has given us the opportunity to talk about the later end of the civil rights movement and the history of the Black Panther Party. "The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano" would be an excellent tie in and would provide opportunities for a deeper study of this important era of the civil rights movement.
