Higher academic performance is linked to physical activity. Some of the benefits of flexible seating include, burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. Middle school students need to be engaged and moving in the classroom, and one way that I am seeking to do that is to be able to provide several choices of seating for my students. Not only will the students be given a chance to burn off some extra energy, but they will also be able to choose a seating preference. Some of the things that I think will benefit my students are: Wobble chairs, lap trays, bouncy bands, stay-n-play balance ball, and inflated stability wobble cushion. Wobble chairs will help students be able to move while still being engaged. Lap trays will help students that want to sit on the floor still have a place to do work. Bouncy bands will help students that need to move their legs while sitting in a normal chair and focusing on math. Stay-n-play balance balls will help those students that feel the need to move and bounce while creating and innovating. Inflated stability wobble cushions will give a way to move and stay engaged while sitting in normal chairs. Four of the items have one thing in common: they all help the students move. I want a way for my students to be able to move so that they can stay focused. If you give to this project you will be helping students stay engaged in their 6th grade math class.
