New state testing, referred to as LEAP tests, require students to compose essays in all subject areas. For example, one section of the English Language Arts test requires students to use three sources of information on a given topic to draft an essay using evidence from all three sources, citing the information as needed. These Chromebooks will give students the opportunity to work in pairs and independently to research topics covered in the science and social studies curriculum using credible sources and websites. Topics that students will research include energy sources, endangered species, animal adaptations, explorers, colonial America, the American Revolution, westward expansion, and the civil rights movement. Students will use the information gathered during the research to organize and compose essays modeled after a given writing prompt.
Since the Board of Education plans to have students take all state tests online next year, my students need the practice to not only research a topic, but to compose an essay online. Their essays will be graded not only on content, but also on conventions of language such as capitalization and punctuation. Sufficient practice is needed to ensure that students can proficiently compose essays online.
Although the Chromebooks will be used mostly for research and writing, they will also be used in other ways in the classroom. The Chromebooks will be used when students take weekly tests online, read and test on books through Accelerated Reader, complete activities on Brainchild website, and engage in the interactive website Kahoot!
